AIA attended the European Federation of Accountants and Auditors for SMEs Council meeting in Brussels last week, on Sustainability Reporting? Challenges and Role of Small and Medium sized Accountancy Practices.

The focus was on the development of European sustainability reporting standards, SMPs capacity to prepare sustainability reporting for SMEs, across Europe with good insight from fellow EFAA members, as well as the role of SMPs in the sustainable transition of Europe’s SMEs.

AIA would like to say thank you to EFAA, specifically Salvador MarinPaul Thompson and Sara Zambelli, for organising such an important meeting. It allowed AIA representatives the opportunity to discuss ideas and thoughts on sustainability across the sector, with accountancy bodies across the continent.

AIA President, Shahram Moallemi, said, "This meeting encouraged discussion around the single biggest challenge facing the EFAA and its members – sustainability across SMEs. The consensus view from AIA and the other 12 professional accountancy organisations present was that the most immediate challenge was coping with the economic slowdown and high inflation: small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and SMPs themselves are looking for support to get through these difficult times.”

AIA Chief Executive, Philip Turnbull, “The key point and central theme of the event was how to help build the capacity of companies and their accountants, especially SMEs and SMPs, to prepare sustainability reports. As a member organisation we understand the importance AIA devoting time and resources into sustainability, but we must encourage our members to also. We want to lead the way in the fight for sustainability to be at the forefront of organisations and their staff, specifically in the accounting sector.”
