AN UPDATE FROM THE WORLD CONGRESS

  

The 20th World Congress of Accountants (WCOA) is well under way in Sydney, Australia. Bringing together more than 6,000 delegates from over 130 countries, this quadrennial event is like no other in the accounting and finance calendar.

 

 

 

Even though technology has made global communication and connectivity easier, there remains something uniquely stimulating about having the opportunity to come together as an industry in one location to identify new challenges, set new goals, and to share knowledge. This is particularly apt in 2018 as the event is being held against the backdrop of a rapidly changing economic and political landscape.

 

Commenting from the event, AIA President Les Bradley said: “The World Congress of Accountants provides a fantastic opportunity to bring together accountants from across the globe to discuss future trends in the accountancy profession and prepare for change. I am privileged to represent our members during the conference and push forward AIA’s agenda focussed on our members and their requirements.”

 

So far AIA representatives have had the pleasure of engaging and networking with delegates from CICPA, IFA, AccountingCPD, CPA Ireland and many more besides. In particular AIA held interesting discussions with CICPA around the need for investment in financial skills and education to support China’s One Belt One Road strategy.

 

Aside from some very worthwhile networking sessions, there has been a number of fascinating speeches, including Diana B. Henriques and Michael Woodford’s keynote on exposing corruption and scandal.
